Preparing for a snowy and cold Super Bowl

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Secaucus Junction is the main transit hub for the Super Bowl. Tuesday's storm hasn't put the brakes on travel. But if it snows like this next week leading up to the big game, officials are vowing that the bad weather won't spoil the fun.

The New Jersey Turnpike can have near-whiteout conditions during a snow storm. The turnpike is one of the main roads to MetLife Stadium, home of Super Bowl XLVIII. The Department of Transportation told Fox 5 it has been doing tabletop exercises and will have extra emergency crews on standby Super Bowl week.

Many of the 400,000 visitors the NFL is expecting will be spending time in Manhattan, where cabs, cars buses and even bikes compete for space on snowy streets. City officials plan to monitor weather conditions carefully and remain flexible.

The Secaucus Junction train station has already geared up for the game. NJ Transit trains will take ticket holders directly to the front door of MetLife Stadium. Transit officials are planning for about 12,000 fans. If a snowstorm hits on game day, the host committee of course has a contingency plan for that.

While the snow is the most obvious weather challenge, all the planning agencies are also concerned about high winds and frigid temperatures, which could damage equipment. Just in case, they plan to also have extra repair teams on standby next week.

There were 16 deaths for all of 2013. Plans call for erecting a 9-foot fence to replace the current railing to make jumping from the bridge difficult.
