Student & former student die over weekend near ISU campus

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Autopsies were performed Monday on two people with ties to Illinois State University and the Chicago area, who were found dead in unrelated incidents near the downstate campus.

The first death was reported at 3:17 p.m. Friday when police found 20-year-old Katie Borenstein unresponsive in her apartment in the 800 block of Hovey Avenue in Normal, about a block south of the ISU campus, authorities said.

Preliminary autopsy results show she died of a blood clot of the pulmonary artery, McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling said. Her death is not considered suspicious, and the final cause of her death will be determined following forensic toxicology and histology tests.

Borenstein had previously attended ISU, but was not currently enrolled as a student, authorities said. She is originally from northwest suburban Buffalo Grove, where her family lives.

According to Facebook and the Stevenson High School website, her mother Nancy Borenstein is a study hall supervisor at the high school in Lincolnshire.

Borenstein majored in Sociology and Psychology at ISU, and worked at Little Learners Daycare in Arlington Heights from 2009-11.

A second, unrelated death was reported about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, when police and fire officials found 19-year-old Yusuf "Yoshi" Ziada dead in a field near Susan and Jumer Drives in Bloomington, the coroner's office said.

Preliminary autopsy results show he died of symptoms of cold exposure, and had no external injuries that led to his death, Kimmerling said. The final cause of death will be determined pending toxicology tests.

Officials said he was not dressed for the wintry conditions. The National Weather Service said the temperature in the area when Ahmad's body was found was about 23 degrees, although the wind chill made it feel like 7.

Ziada was a sophomore business major at ISU, and a former member of the university's chapter of the Delta Chi fraternity. The Oak Lawn native last lived in the 700 block of Gregory Street in Normal.

Police believe he died after he wandered away from the Chateau Hotel on Jumer Drive in Bloomington, then collapsed, the coroner's office said.

Ziada graduated from Oak Lawn Community High School in 2012, Principal/Supt. Michael Riordan said Monday.

"He was a good student and a fine young man. He was involved in our student council and served as a class officer during his four years (here). Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," Riordan said.

Ziada has two younger siblings who attend the school, he said.

Relatives at the Ziada family's home on 49th Court had no comment Monday.

Police from Bloomington and Normal continue to investigate both deaths.
