Super Bowl history: Much has changed since 1967 `Super Game`

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

As we approach Super Bowl XVLIII, it's nice to be reminded of how much the big game has changed since its debut back in 1967.

It's amazing how much can change in half a century. As the world prepares to once again witness an epic joust in jersey, it's hard to imagine a world where the words "super bowl" didn't dominate an entire culture.

But on Jan. 15, 1967, when the Green Bay Packers took on the Kansas City Chiefs at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in a unprecedented event called "The Super Game," things were different.

To start, the first super bowl didn't even sell out. Of the 94,000-seat capacity, 33,000 tickets went unsold. It's the only Super Bowl in history that did not sell out.

The most expensive tickets for Super Bowl 1 were $12 (about $84 today). If you want to watch the Seattle Seahawks take on the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in person on Feb. 2, you'll have to shell out about $2,600.

While Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers will dominate this year's half time show, the first performers were a little less well known. The first Super Bowl halftime show featured the marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University.

The battle on the field was just as intense as the battle off the field and in the media in 1967. One network owned the rights to the American Football League and another owned the rights to the National Football League. Whether you're an avid football fan or not, we all love the commercials. A 30 sec. ad costs about $4 million. Nearly 50 years ago, they were only $42,000.

Amid all the changes, the spirit of football stays the same. Vince Lombardi, the coach of the first-ever Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, said it best:

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious."

The only place you can see Super Bowl XLVIII is right here on FOX 32. We'll have a four-hour pregame show from 1-5 p.m. on Feb. 2. Don't forget to tune in! Kickoff will be at 5:25 p.m.
