Expressway ramp reopens after semi hauling metal overturns

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A ramp from the Dan Ryan Expressway to the Stevenson Expressway was blocked for hours Monday as crews cleaned up a semi that rolled over and spilled its load of sheet metal.

The Freightliner was on the ramp from the southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan (I-90/94) to the southbound lanes of the Stevenson (I-55) when it crashed about 3:50 p.m., Illinois State Police said.

The load of sheet metal shifted, causing the wreck, police said.

The crash ruptured the semi's fuel tank, spilling a small amount of diesel fuel, police said.

Chicago Fire Department crews called a hazardous materials response to the site of the crash, and the spill has been contained and removed, officials said.

Crews spend hours picking up the spilled cargo, State Police said. The ramp has reopened as of 9:30 p.m.

The driver, a 39-year-old from Dyersville, Iowa, was wearing a seatbelt and was not hurt, police said.
