I thought it was going to be cold ?
Well it's the NFL's biggest game of the country's biggest sport, so you might as well have it in the biggest city and the biggest media market, right ? Welcome to Super Bowl 48 (I'm still working on the correct Roman Numerals, but more on that this week live from Manhattan ) .
First impressions upon arriving in NYC in a manageable 18 degree chill is that this is another huge event in a city where huge events are pretty routine, but it is sure to build to an explosion by the weekend.
Times Square is ablaze in artificial light and TV scaffolding and hot dog stands and people from Kansas, Seattle, Denver, LA, and many other parts unknown.
Oh, did I mention the game itself isn't even in NY? Yes, much will be made and has already been made about the fact that the game is over the Hudson in East Rutherford , NJ, but the parties, the hotels, the action, is in NYC.
They even renamed a stretch of Broadway "Super Bowl Blvd," By GMC. Everything is sponsored . Nice.
The teams themselves: remember them? Well at least they're staying in New Jersey.
There are some 5000 media members credentialed, and there are enough scheduled events to keep all of them busy whether they're from Sports Illustrated, or Chinese News Daily, or Maxim Magazine, or Slate, or Drudge, or Fox 11. But you get the idea.
You literally have to go through a long list of scheduled events for each day. Do football fans care?Probably not a lot, though the players are available each day and the NFL emails out their quotes from their ''media availability."
As far as I know, Richard Sherman has not scared anyone yet, nor even yelled at anyone. ( Great piece in the LAT on his Dad the Sanitation worker today; did you see it ? By the way, LAT is the L.A. Times-- You remember: in the old days, that collection of newsprint that someone tossed in your driveway every morning ? )
We're here, we're excited, we're tweeting, we're texting ( social media has a huge command post here; I'll be visiting that. ) Look for me on Good Day LA, Studio 11 LA, everywhere. @foxphil #followphil
