Scientists paying volunteers to get the flu

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Scientists with National Institutes of Health are infecting healthy people with the flu all in the name of science.

Indeed, 100 healthy adults agreed to be infected with the live influenza virus. The dose produces mild to moderate symptoms. The volunteers, who will be paid $3,000, will be quarantined for 9 days.

Dr. Michael Frank, an internist on the Upper East Side, said he believes it is a well-controlled, safe, and landmark study. He said researchers involved in the government study want to measure how the immune system reacts from the moment of infection.

It might be hard to believe, but how someone is able to fight off getting the flu is still somewhat of a mystery that perhaps this study could help solve.

Why does one person who is exposed to the virus get sick while someone else doesn't? Why do some people who have been vaccinated still get sick while others don't? These are some questions needing answers.
