NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency on Wednesday during a fierce ice and snow storm hitting the region. Cuomo said via Twitter that a shortage of salt to melt ice and snow was a factor.

"Shortage of salt is complicate(d) factor - we declared a state of emergency for the entire State," he Tweeted. "This is another example of (a) pattern of extreme weather. It's manageable but this will be (a) significant challenge going forward."

New York and the tristate region were battling the second storm of the week with another round of snow in the forecast for Sunday.

"We have enough now that we can help areas that need it. We'll replenish when storm abates," said Cuomo.

New York City and on Long Island have reported shortages, he said.

Surplus salt supplies from State stockpiles will be moved to New York City and Long Island.

A total of 3,500 tons of road salt - about 130 truckloads - was being sent to those communities. The state is also working with suppliers to increase salt deliveries to local governments.

A hardware store on Long Island had no salt left. The manager said he believes distributors underestimated the impact of this winter's storms.

Streets and sidewalks were slick and looked like a sheet of ice covering the area below. The storm created hazardous travel conditions.

Many schools across the region were closed Wednesday, but New York City public schools remained open.
