LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

The poor voters in Michigan will be inundated with numbers this election year as Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer dazzle you with so many figures your head will start spinning.

Only a few days into the campaign the back and forth over job figures is in full bloom.  The governor's commercial argues "Michigan gained 220,000 private sector jobs" due to decisions he's made.

Mr. Schauer counters the governor's policies had nothing to do with that.  It was President Obama's 11th hour rescue of GM and Chrysler that produced the new employment.  And others point out the current recovery started just as former Gov. Jennifer Granholm was leaving office.  She missed it by "that" much.

Since the economy will be central to who wins the race for governor, the fact checkers had a field day after the Super Bowl ad came out. They promptly slapped a "technical foul" on Mr. Snyder on the job figure.

First they said that figure came from a University of Michigan forecast that nobody has seen. Or put another way, you are suppose to trust the Snyder ad handlers that they told the truth.  Secondly, the governor left out some revealing data.  (Perish the thought that a political commercial would conveniently leave out some information.)

The fact-checkers concede jobs are increasing but the state is still 500,000 jobs short of where we were in 2003.

Well wouldn't the fact-checkers be surprised to learn that the governor is not taking credit for any job creation.

"I don't take credit for creating jobs per se, but we created an environment to really make job creation happen.  And that is true," he asserts during a one on one interview adding, "I don't view the public sector as creating jobs."

It is true the commercial did not say the governor created those jobs, using the word "gained" instead. But for the casual viewer, you'd have to be paying close attention to catch that nuance word.

To be more forth coming perhaps Snyder's campaign should change the wording in the spot to read, "While the governor says he did not create those 220,000 jobs, he did create the environment for them to grow."

Based on his own remarks that would be much closer to his version of the truth and more revealing for the voters.  And the fact-checkers would have to give him points for that although Mr. Schauer might not.
