South Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) One man was shot to death in the parking lot of a church in Westmont, abutting South Los Angeles, and a second man was wounded, authorities said today.

The man who was killed was escorting his wife to church and stopped to talk to another man in the parking lot of the 88th Street Temple Church of God in Christ in the 8800 block of South Vermont Avenue around 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Don Walker. They were confronted by a third man, who, after a brief exchange, opened fire on both men, he said.

John Matthews, 36, of Los Angeles died at a hospital, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. The other man, who is 35, was hospitalized in critical condition, Walker said. His name was not released.

The second victim appeared to be a church security guard, a news videographer reported from the scene. The shooter was last seen running on West 89th Street west of Vermont, Walker said.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately determined. A recorded telephone message said bible study was being held at the church between 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Suspect is described as a male black 5'8″. Witnesses are urged to contact Los Angeles County Sheriffs detectives at (323) 890-5500
