Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Not What You Would Expect At The Movies

Posted: Updated:

Two big Hollywood movies are being released this weekend. One is a star studded drama set during World War II directed by an Oscar winning megastar. The other is a kiddie flick inspired by colorful building blocks. Guess which film critics are loving? Probably not the one you think. Matt Atchity from Rotten Tomatoes says "Lego" of any preconceived notions you may have and go see "The Lego Movie".

"This movie is absolutely a must see! The first two thirds of the movie, totally chaotic, totally funny, wall to wall laughs, but it's about what you'd expect. Lots of goofball kid moments. And then in the third act it takes this shockingly emotional turn...my wife and I got more than a little choked up...not only will the kids love it but the parents will be weeping at the end."

How can a movie starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, and others go wrong? Matt says "The Monuments Men" somehow does and it's quite surprising given the talent in front of and behind the camera. It follows a platoon going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners.

"The critics are mostly disappointed with this...the movie never really hits the impact that it needs to. You don't get the impact of the war, you don't get the impact of the importance of the art so if you don't go into this movie understanding why it's important that they save this, the movie doesn't do a good job of explaining that to you. The cast goes a long way to help make this watchable but you kinda come away from it wishing it had more impact.

So what about "Vampire Academy"? Critics weren't allowed to see it which probably means this "Vampire" sucks.
