MTA weekend shutdown: Business owners fear the worst in Queens

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

No one that we spoke to in Long Island City is happy about the 7 train shut down on weekends.

Small business owners fear this shutdown could put them out of business.

To say Rebecca Trent, owner of Creek and Cave Comedy Club in Long Island city is angry and frustrated right now may be an understatement.

Rebecca says she fears the worst. “It's going to be catastrophic! Are you kidding me?!” she said.

The 7 train, which connects Queens to Manhattan, will be shutting down on weekends starting at the end of the month and lasting until July.

Rebecca fears the shutdown will destroy her business.

“The bulk of our business happens on the weekends” she said.

The MTA is cutting the 7 weekend service in order to do maintenance and repair work.

Jeff Blath opened Alobar Restaurant about 2 years ago.

He's worried that his place will be completely empty during the shutdown.

“It's going to be awful” Jeff said.

The MTA says it's willing to develop an advertising campaign to help offset the weekend train shutdown.

Queens officials are expected to meet with the MTA on Thursday to discuss other options.

That meeting will not be open to the public.
