LA Derby Dolls: A Look Inside Women's Roller Derby

Posted: Updated:

Roller derby is the fastest growing sport among females, according to the LA derby dolls.  The team is the number one banked track team in the country with roots in Downtown LA for decades.

Now the team is searching for a new home after the landlord of the facility decided to turn the warehouse type arena into condos.

Player "Suzie Snake eyes" has been in the sport for ten years and says "we hope we can find a new location for this team and have launched a fundraising drive to help us secure a new home".

More than 200 ladies are in the league with dozens trying out to make it on the team twice a year.

The athletes say the sport is like a mix between hockey and football for women. It's full contact where teams use their blocking skills to keep the other team away and to make a passageway for a "jammer" to pass through the lane to score.

Fun facts about the L.A. Derby Dolls Roller Derby Team:

The L.A. Derby Dolls are Southern California's premiere all-female, banked track roller derby league. Founded in October 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls are a league of more than 150 adult skaters, 130 Jr skaters ages 7 - 17, 100's of volunteers and support staff. The Derby Dolls currently hold the first place title in the US in both Adult and Jr classes on the Banked Track.

Next to skating, community service is the most important commitment the L.A. Derby Dolls have. In the spirit of giving back to those around them, especially the community that has welcomed them with such support and friendship, the L.A. Derby Dolls are always on the lookout for opportunities to repay the good fortune they've been granted. As such, the L.A. Derby Dolls have partnered on events with the Peace Project, LA City Commission on the Status of Women, The Mayor's Day of Service, LA City Council District 13, Peace Over Violence, The Human Rights Campaign, Children of the Night, Big Sunday, AIDS Project LA, Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and the American Diabetes Association. The L.A. Derby Dolls have also hosted "Twentywonder" for 4 years in a row on their annual fundraiser for Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA). In addition for 5 consecutive years the Derby Dolls have hosted a Job and Health fair for all those in the community.

The Derby Dolls hold strictly to their mission: The Derby Dolls are committed to achieving the highest level of competition, integrity, and fan experience while enriching the lives of our members and community through sport.

In our original location in Little Tokyo and our current location in Historic Filipinotown we have played a part in the revitalization of both neighborhoods. We look forward in our next location to continue to bring economic stimulation to the area, community involvement and civic pride.

It's who we are and what we do.
