Woman Killed by Big Rig Walking Daughter to School

Posted: Updated:

Where was the crossing guard?

Micaal Stevens walked up to me outside Citizens of the World Charter School and said "it's tragic. I'm hurt." He said his daughter knew the little girl and mom hit by a big rig earlier in the day.

Fact is, he was about as numb as every other parent outside the private school that uses space at LeConte Middle School for its 5 to 10 year-olds.

Tuesday morning about 8am a big rig rolling south of Bronson carrying concrete and cement bags hit a woman and her daughter walking in the crosswalk.

The woman, in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 10 year-old is hurt, but expected to survive.

Parents said this was an awful accident waiting to happen. They said police cruise the are, but a crossing guard and more stop signs would help because the traffic here in the morning is so bad. Jackie Greig told us "It's horrible. We've been trying to get a crossing guard or a street light."

Ira Belgrade used to be the chairman of the school's safety committee. He wanted flashing lights installed. He told me the liason for LAUSD told him "The city could never pay for that."

The LA Department of Transportation has a policy of not placing crossing guards at middle schools, but with CWC nestled in the LeConte Middle School there are now little kids here. So, we asked the LADOT why not put a crossing guard at this school?

They sent us this statement:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family after today's tragic accident. Safety is a priority for the department and we are looking at increasing the resources allocated to the crossing guard program and identifying additional safety measures. This location qualified for a crossing guard but one was not assigned due to limited resources. At this time a police investigation is underway and it would be inappropriate to comment further."

(FOX 11/ CNS) - A woman died today at a hospital after being struck by a big rig while crossing a street with her 9-year-old daughter near Le Conte Middle School in Hollywood. Paramedics were sent to the 1300 block of Bronson Avenue at 7:48 a.m.

The girl was also taken to a hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries, said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The pair were in a crosswalk when they were struck by the southbound truck, said Officer Wendy Reyes of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office.

The trucker stopped at the scene, and was questioned by police.ABC7 reported that the girl was a student at Citizens of the World

Charter School, which is on the campus of Le Conte Middle School. Counselors were sent to the campus, according to the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Commuters told news crews that morning traffic around the neighborhood was typically congested.

Authorities withheld the woman's name pending notification of family members.
