Happy President's Day...Sale

Posted: Updated:

Happy President's Day everybody. It's that holiday when we celebrate...we  celebrate...what do we celebrate?

Why we're celebrating the presidents of our country...I guess all of them. So have you taken a few moments to think about James Buchanan?  Or Benjamin Harrison, or for that matter William Henry Harrison who lasted 32 days in office before succumbing to pneumonia. And how about Millard Fillmore - for whom the town of Fillmore, California ISN'T EVEN named?

And old Chester: Chester A. Arthur. Not to be confused with Rutherford B. Hayes. I know they are top of mind.

Oh, and most of us understand that this holiday vaguely honors those two titans of American history: GeorgeWashington and Abraham Lincoln, who had the bad luck of having birthdays fall a couple of weeks apart.

So back in 1971, not wanting to have two federal holidays in the same month, it was decided to split the baby in half and have one day somewhere in between, and then call that Presidents' Day and basically suck out any real meaning for the day. So now we have a three day holiday that for the most part seems to have  three words in it's name: President's Day Sale, which seems to have become the de facto designation. It's not a bad thing. We need to buy, merchants need to sell, and the economy needs to grow.

So today when you 're purchasing that HD TV or sofa or of course mattress, take a moment and wish happy birthday to those American heroes George Washington and Abraham  Lincoln--even though it's not their birthday.
