Disney Animator Floyd E. Norman: 'Mr. Fun'

Posted: Updated:

Hum along with me and get the song stuck in your head, because it certainly will be in mine all day! "Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities, forget about your worries and your strife, I mean the bare necessities, Old Mother Nature's recipes, that brings the bare necessities of life!"

Okay I'll stop there, but the reason we're humming that song today is we had Animator Floyd E. Norman on "Good Day LA" today and he happens to be one of the animators who worked on "The Jungle Book" as well as  a bunch of other Disney classics.

Norman was a young animator hired for a one month tryout at the Disney studio back in 1956.  He would actually make history as he was the studio's first African American animator.  He would go on to work for Disney on and off for nearly 50 years.

These days he has a blog called "Mr. Fun's Blog" you can get to it here:  http://floydnormancom.squarespace.com/

He's also written a book called "Animated Life: A Lifetime of Tips, Tricks, and Stories From a Disney Legend".  And at 78 he's just dapper as can be and a real joy to interview.  He did a few sketches for us before leaving.

Floyd stopped by the studios to promote the release of the Diamond Edition of  "The Jungle Book" coming out on Blu ray/DVD and in case you haven't watched it in a while it still holds up after all these years and so fun to share with your kids!

An NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice, " sharing beating photos and more.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
