De Blasio: Reduce speed limit on some NYC streets

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the Vision Zero action plan to help reducing citywide speed limit on large streets from 30 mph to 25 mph and put up more red light cameras and speed cameras.

Vision Zero will increase the number of police officers in the NYPD's Highway Division from 190 to 263. And the city's Department of Transportation will redesign some streets after community input. Planners will add traffic control things red light cameras speed bumps and slow zones in an effort to reduce traffic deaths, which were almost as high as homicides.

To emphasize their point, de Blasio and other city officials had at the news conference the families of traffic victims, including the mother of little Alison Liao, 3, who was run over on a Sunday afternoon in October in flushing by a SUV while crossing on a green light with her grandmother.

NYC needs permission from Albany to reduce overall speed to 25 mph and for more than 160 red light cameras and 20 speed cameras. The mayor is hopeful as are advocates. This is a home-rule issue, so if the city can get control of these changes it could also impact de Blasio's universal pre-K and tax-on-the rich plans.
