Winter Ice Creates Loads Of Headaches For Residents

Posted: Updated:
Mt. Airy -

It's been a seemingly endless winter with frigid temperatures, snow, and ice creating loads of headaches.

For some people, spring can't come soon enough. Especially those people who are having major problems just getting around!

It's making life difficult for people in Mt. Airy.

It's another day of digging out for Jathiyah Lash, something she's grown far too accustomed to doing.

"It's big pain because it's a bunch of snow and nowhere to put it and it's a little tiny street," Lash said.

She spent the day shoveling a parking spot for her mother after another round of snow showers added to the pile.

A school bus struggled navigating the 13th snowfall of the season while the streets were covered in the morning.

"It's like you can ice skate on the street, it's terrible. Forget Sochi, you can have Sochi right here," one concerned resident said.

By mid-afternoon, warmer temperatures helped improve overall road conditions.

"I had to go get salt yesterday, couldn't hardly find it anywhere," Izell Postom said.

Still, sidewalks and side streets remain a problem for residents like Postom.

"Well I'm tired, I'm retired I'm almost 80 years old. So you can imagine how I feel," he said.

Cars left parked on the street are covered with mounds of ice and snow.

The ones that are open and cleared are saved with cones and chairs, because they don't want their hard work to go to waste.

They're all problems residents say just won't seem to go away.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman asked, "Do you feel like you're a hamster on a treadmill almost?"

"At my age I'm telling you, it's rough," Postom laughed.

"I'm truly tired. I wish somebody would just come down the same way they do the main streets and the bus stops. I wish they would come down our little street," Lash said.

The thought of warmer temperatures definitely brought a smile to several people in Mt. Airy.

The hope is a change in the forecast will melt away and wash away all the piled up snow.
