Internet Doctor Visits

Posted: Updated:

I never did like going to my 11am doctor appointment only to be told at 11:30 that the doctor is running a little late. Twenty minutes later, I'm guided to an exam room where I wait another ten or fifteen minutes before my four minute audience with the… I was about to say, the Pope but the Pope is usually on time.  Anyway, my point is, now I don't have to watch my finger nails grow longer in a waiting room. Now I, many of us, can schedule a video chat exam with a Doc.

On-line doctor exam companies are popping up all over the internet. I interviewed one of the physicians jumping on board. Dr. James Kojian is a former E.R. doc who has started DrToHelp.com. Like OneMedical, MeMD or InteractiveMD, Kojian's practice has patients fill out an extensive medical history form and then for around $40, you can see the doctor via webcam. This is where you will be happy you popped for the fancy High Def cam because when the Doc says "Say Ahh…" you want him to be able to see the difference between strep throat and the pasta sauce you had for lunch.

I'm not joking. The doctor may ask you to move the camera to a few places as he or she figures out what is wrong with you. Dr. Kojian says 90% of the diagnosis actually comes from a patient's medical history but the HD helps. After that, if you need medicine, the doctor can give you an e-prescription.

Look, I'm not endorsing this but it does intrigue me enough to try it. The fact is, millions, probably billions are written off by hospitals whose emergency rooms treat patients for coughs and sneezes.  Millions of Americans still can't afford health insurance even with Obama Care. This is $40. And if you have a PPO, the virtual exam is apparently covered. Are there downsides? Sure. But I'm betting my on-line physician will be able to remove the chip off my shoulder that I got years ago in a doctor's waiting room.
