Local family searches for donkey's killer

Posted: Updated:

A Barrow County local family wants answers about who shot and killed their donkey, last weekend.

Bonnie was more than a guard donkey for the family's cattle; he was also a pet and the Crow family can't understand why someone shot Bonnie dead.

Fourteen-year-old Clayton Crowe discovered Bonnie when he was four-wheeling on Sunday.

"I thought he was asleep, and then I noticed that he was dead," Crowe said.

Bonnie was one of three male guard donkeys at the Garret Crowe Farm in Winder. There's also Rufus and Clyde placed to protect calves against predators. The donkeys don't like any dogs or wild dogs or coyotes so they'll chase them down and stalk them.

Investigators believe a different type of predator deliberately killed Bonnie sometime Saturday with a single shot, from a couple hundred yards away.

The donkey was buried not far from where it died. And the family plans to have the body of Bonnie exhumed to have a veterinarian remove the single bullet as evidence.

Barrow County sheriff Judd Smith said the shooter likely face as felony charge of Aggravated Animal Cruelty.

Bonnie's owners are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. People are being asked to leave tips with the Sheriff's Office at (770) 307-3080.
