As he does before the start of the Major League Baseball season, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter addressed the media on Wednesday from training camp in Tampa, Florida.

As much as he said he didn't want questions to focus on his retirement but on the upcoming season, Jeter was peppered with questions as to why now.

The 39-year-old New York captain posted a long letter on his Facebook page last week saying that 2014 will be his final year.

"I let the message out and said everything I had to say in that message," said Jeter.

A 13-time All-Star who has led the Yankees to five World Series championships, Jeter was limited to 17 games last season while trying to recover from a broken left ankle sustained during the 2012 playoffs.

"I've been very vocal about how difficult last year was," Jeter said. "You start thinking about how long you really want to do this. Coming to the field was always easy. I've been blessed to have pretty good health in my career. It became a job last year. That was not fun at all."

Jeter was the last link to the powerful Yankees teams that won three straight World Series crowns from 1998-2000. Longtime teammates Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte retired after last year.

Jeter, who turns 40 in June, hit just .190 with one homer and seven RBIs last season.

"I know I worked harder this off-season than I've ever worked before. I feel good," Jeter said. "And let me say one thing is, this is not a retirement press conference. I still have a season to play."
