Paulsboro Wrestling Team Reacts To Controversial Photo

Posted: Updated:

"It was kind of disrespectful," said Davontae Randall, a heavyweight for the Paulsboro High School wrestling team. He's offended by a photo that a rival wrestling team from Phillipsburg High posted on social media after a big win.

"It kind of made my stomach feel funny a little bit. It was a bad feeling when I saw it," said Davontae.

The picture shows a practice dummy dressed in a Paulsboro jersey with a noose around its neck. Two of the boys in the picture are wearing pointed hoods and another is holding a paddle.

Davontae has mixed feelings about whether it depicts racism but says others are confident.

"A lot of the people in my school that's African American think that it is." Davontae said others in the school who aren't African America somewhat agree.

The Paulsboro School Superintendent tells us the photo was quote "Insensitive and foolish to say the least. The Superintendent went on to say, "We're hoping there were no intentional racial overtones."

"At first we were just like wow we didn't expect it because we have a good friendly rival with Phillipsburg," said Paulsboro team wrestler Sam Morina. He has mixed feelings about the intentions of the photo.

"I thought it was a little racial but I'm more towards the side of it just being the friendly rival. Kids make mistakes. Kids do stupid things and it just happened to be the wrong thing to do," said Sam.

Davontae says while the intentions may not have been racist it's unacceptable.

"You get to an age when you know right from wrong and I think that just was wrong," said Davontae.

A statement from the Phillipsburg Office of the Superintendent reads, "The incident reported is a student matter dealing with minors. An investigation was undertaken and upon conclusion of the investigation actions were taken by the district consistent with its policies."

No details were provided on the actions taken.

Meanwhile, school sports officials have asked a state Civil Rights agency to look into the photo under an anti-bullying policy.
