The Best Jobs Of 2014

Posted: Updated:

The list of the best jobs of 2014 is out now and I can't say I'm all that surprised by the top five. The list is put out by US News and World Report and is, as far as I'm concerned, more subjective than anything else. But the editors at the magazine say they considered a number factors when putting together the list and job rankings. Perhaps the biggest surprise is, for the first time, the top job overall is not in the health care industry. It's an important indication how times and the economy are changing, if you agree with the publication's data. Below is a list of the top five occupations.

(1) SOFTWARE DEVELOPER/PROGRAMMER

According to US News, this job is in demand in all parts of the country, doesn't require a lot of extended education and pays an average of 90-thousand dollars a year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts there will be nearly 140,000 brand new software development jobs created before 2022.

(2) COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST

Yep, another tech oriented job. This one deals with design, troubleshooting and analysis and pays an average of nearly 84-thousand dollars a year. The BLS predicts 24.5% growth in this occupation by 2022.

The next three of the top five professions are health related.

Number three is a dentist.

Number four is nurse practitioner and number five is a pharmacist.

Physician, by the way, falls down to number eight on the list.

If nothing else, the list can help high school students with what fields they might want to explore when they go to college. But when it comes right down to it, the best job is not just one that pays the bills but one you truly enjoy.
