DETROIT (WJBK) -

Mayor Mike Duggan announced Monday installation of security cameras has begun on Detroit Department of Transportation bus fleet.

The first phase of the installation began last week. Eight cameras will be installed on 50 buses by the end of March. The cameras will be installed on the interiors and exteriors of the buses, and record high definition images saved to DVDs.

Cameras are expected to be installed on the entire fleet of buses by late summer. Two-hundred-fifty buses make up the fleet.

Recent fights, assaults and other crimes have taken a toll on bus drivers and riders. More than 100 thousand people rely on the DDOT bus system.

"We are going to keep our drivers and passengers safe, and this is the first step in that direction," says Mayor Duggan.

The first round of cameras cost $250,000. The remainder of the cameras will cost about $2.5 million. The money is coming from the Federal Transit Administration.

"We still need transit police. We still need equipment so we won't have to worry about the buses not running on time. Once all that comes to fruition, then we can truly feel safe," says Fred Westbrook of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

The mayor says efforts to have full-time transit police working on buses and along the routes are underway.
