Making Fitness A Priority

Posted: Updated:

From fly yoga to dancing Swango to Pole fitness, we often feature new and exciting emerging fitness fads. Many of them require specialty classes and expert instruction to learn and master. While they are fun ways to get fit and are certainly challenging, it doesn't take a unique apparatus or a brand new way of moving to stay healthy.

On assignment in front of the newly refurbished Forum in Inglewood to cover the Dalai Lama, I was struck by the dozens of residents who drive before sunrise, park along the curb, and get out of their cars to walk around the parking lot.  Many are dressed in sweats and sneakers, some carry canes to walk with, others stop at the corner to do lunges.

They all share "good mornings" and are happy to breathe in the fresh outdoor air and work up their heart rates. Nobody is wearing the latest 60 dollar pair of leggings or paying for a pricey trainer, they're doing things the old fashioned way to stay healthy.

While it may be more comfortable and easier to stay in bed at home, these residents make fitness a priority.

It's a good reminder, anyone can take control to have a healthy mind and body, all it takes is a little self motivation to take the first step.
