My Jason Collins Moment

Posted: Updated:

I've been living in Los Angeles for two-and-a-half months and I'm still getting used to "celebrity sightings." My first was Harrison Ford.  I spotted Mr. Ford at Century City Mall and did my best to hide my excitement over seeing  Han Solo in person.   Next was Meredith Baxter at, of all places, Bed Bath and Beyond.  This took me back to my childhood, when I was a faithful Family Ties viewer.  Then, I saw Mr. Hells Kitchen himself, Gordon Ramsey.  And we can't forget James Caan.    Most recently,  I spotted Piers Morgan in Beverly Hills.  He was kind enough to let me snap this photo with him.

But, perhaps I was most star struck Monday night, one day after NBA sensation Jason Collins made history when he became the first openly gay, active player in the United States' four big sports leagues.  Of course on Monday morning, we spent quite a bit of time on Good Day LA talking about Collins' 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets.  We applauded the 7-footer from nearby Northridge and recognized just how big of a deal his "active player" status truly is.

Fast forward twelve hours, when a guy walks into the restaurant where I happen to be. The minute I saw him, I can assure you my smile was as wide as he was tall.  As he sat at the bar one seat removed from me, I thought, "I have to say hi. I just have to."  So, I gathered the courage and explained that  I was  sorry to bother him,  (not really) and said , "You're Jason Collins."  Suddenly, his smile was even bigger than mine and he responded, "I'm his twin, Jarron." Of course you are, I thought, Jason is on the road with the Nets.  Silly me (blush).  But, Jarron, a former NBA player himself, assured me I'm not the first to mix-up the duo (especially of late) and when I told him about our on-air support for his brother just hours earlier, he was ever so grateful.

Between then and now, Jason's become the NBA's most popular player, based on jersey sales.  League officials say his uniform is the top-seller on  No doubt  this means Jarron will encounter even more mistaken identity moments, like our run-in the other night.  In fact, I dare you to say hi next time you think you spot Jason Collins, because even if it's NOT the Nets' newest get, you'll be lucky enough to meet his other half.
