Local mother turns life around, inspires others after suffering a stroke

A metro Detroit wife and mother lost 130 pounds, but it took a brush with death to make the change.

"I felt a pop in my left eye, and right away I lost vision in my left eye and I told my husband right away, 'I need to go to the hospital. I know something's happened," Sheri Lindsay remembers.

She was having a stroke. Years of high blood pressure, obesity and out-of-control diabetes had taken a toll.

"I was embarrassed because I thought, 'Oh my God, I know I did this to myself,'" Lindsay says.

As she focused on raising two boys her weight crept up to 270.
 
"I was so focused on my children and my family, and during that whole time I just lost myself," she says.

After her stroke her left side was numb and weak and she could hardly walk. So, she joined a gym and hopped on a bike. She says she pedaled with one foot for about three months.

At the same time, with help from a calorie counting app, she started tracking all of her food. She gave up pizza, sweets, hamburgers and soda pop. Two years later her decisions have paid off - she has lost 130 pounds.

Now, her blood pressure and diabetes are under control and she is doing grueling workouts five days a week. At 51 years old, she has a new outlook on life.

"I actually call my stroke 'The Gift'. I call it a gift that just keeps giving back, because I had the stroke and I was able to recover I'm able to share my story and hopefully inspire other women and men to make the change before they have this medical emergency," she says.

One of the big messages during heart month, February, is know your numbers. Sheri says she didn't really keep track of her blood pressure or blood sugar, and wishes she had.
