NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Olympic champion Mo Farah of Great Britain, one of the most famous distance runners in the world, is set to run the NYC Half on March 16, 2014, according to New York Road Runners, which organizes the race.

Farah won double gold at the London Olympics in 2012 in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. He also repeated the double gold at the World Championships in Moscow in 2013.

Farah is using the NYC Half as a tune-up race while training for April's London Marathon.

"I have been training hard in Kenya and hope to use the New York race to gauge my fitness one month out from my 26.2 mile debut," Farah said in a statement released by NYRR.

Farah is the 2011 NYC Half champion, so he is familiar with the race, although this year's course is somewhat different.

"We're very excited to welcome Mo back to the NYC Half," NYRR President and CEO Mary Wittenberg said in a statement. "This is a huge thrill for New Yorkers, who will get to see the world’s top distance runner on the streets of Manhattan before he makes his full marathon debut in London. Mo's star quality and fan following are unmatched in our sport, and we are honored to have him highlight our professional field."

The NYC Half is the Road Runners' flagship half-marathon. The race begins with a partial loop of Central Park, heads south into Times Square, shoots down the West Side Highway, and ends in Lower Manhattan.

Farah's jubilant facial expressions after winning gold twice in London earned him legions of fans and also inspired the Internet memes called "Mo Farah Running Away from Things."

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
