Brushfire Burn Areas Prep for Rain

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of residents in the Colby Fire burn area are working around the clock to prepare for two rainstorms that have the potential to cause flooding in the foothills in Azusa and Glendora burned in the January fire.

There's been a voluntary evacuation order in place for the two-thousand acre area since Wednesday morning, but few, if any, residents have decide to leave. Instead, they've spent the past few days filling sandbags. So far, about 18,000 bags of sand have been filled. Glendora city officials say they need 12,000 more. Meantime, more than 1.6 miles of k-rail are being put into place to help channel any rain and mud through the streets.

Here's what Glendora is telling residents:

*Residents directed to remove vehicles, trash bins, other obstructions from streets and/or travel lanes prior to evacuating as they will be subject to tow or removal by authorities

*Residents will be directed to an Evacuation Center.

*Residents electing not to evacuate will be asked to sign a Refusal to Evacuate Form acknowledging their awareness of the hazards/risk and assuming all liability for the decision to remain and shelter in place

*Residents who do cooperate with the evacuation order will be afforded the opportunity to regain entry to their residential area at the discretion of the Police Department upon the showing of proof of residency and signing a waiver form acknowledging their decision to re-enter and/or remain

The Evacuation Center is at the Crowther Teen & Family Center located at 241 W. Dawson Ave. Glendora, CA 91740 (just west of Glendora Ave. south of the 210 freeway).

Inland Valley Humane Society will be at the Evacuation Center to assist with small animals. For horses, go to Gate #1 at the Pomona Fairplex.

On Thursday, the city will decide whether to make the evacuation mandatory after consulting with the National Weather Service.

Also, Los Angeles and Ventura County fire departments are also offering free bags and sand to any residents in other areas who want them. Bring your own shovel!
