Spare Change II on stage at Detroit's Music Hall

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT, MI -January 28, 2014: Actor/Playwright Loren Harper explores the epidemic of homelessness in his new, heartwarming production, Spare Change II which runs at The Music Hall Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, February 27-March 2, 2014.

Spare Change II follows the challenges and woes of Doris Johnson who is dealing with a myriad of problems including job loss, separation from her husband, and an estranged sister. The recent loss of her mother sends her almost over the edge when she doesn't have the money to pay for the funeral. Lost in despair, she encounters and old, dirty bum named Spare Change and he encourages her to have faith in spite of her circumstances. The hilariously funny and sometimes bizarre, Spare Change shows he has a lot more to give than receives, and he teaches everyone about the power of hope and gratitude.
The show's visionary, Loren Harper uses his own life experience to craft the story and personalities in Spare Change. Like the main character, Loren's life was riddled with tragedy and difficult times. "I had tremendous success in the beginning of my career and then I developed a serious drug habit, was shot in the back, became homeless and lost everything," says Harper. "I was in trouble but I wanted my life to change, so when I found out about the Salvation Army, I knew it was a sign from God that I was going to be okay," he adds. "Loren's work as an actor and writer is brave and unstinting, compassionate and heartfelt," says journalist Greg Dunmore.  "In such challenging times, we are so focused on our own problems that we forget that there are others who are dealing with much worse.  Seeing Spare Change II is a perfect way to instill a sense of gratitude and spiritual uplift for the blessing we overlook," he adds.
The stars of the show are multi-Grammy nominee, gospel great Vickie Winans and Billboard chart-topping gospel artist, Lisa Page Brooks. The show will also showcase the tremendous vocal stylings of Detroit's own Dr. E. LaQuint Weaver II & The Hallelujah Singers and it will feature Loren Harper himself starring as Spare Change.
"This show has everything-- it will make you laugh, and cry but most importantly, unlike most urban theater productions, it is really something that the entire family can enjoy, says writer/director Harper. This is a multi-generational show and there is something in it for everyone," adds Harper.
Ticket prices range from $22.50- $35.50 and all shows begin at 8pm except Sunday which starts at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at The Music Hall Box Office, God's World, online at <> or by calling Ticketmaster charge by phone at 800-982-2787.
