Police Search For Suspects In Shooting Of Haitian Store Owner's Son

PHILADELPHIA -

Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on the son of an oxford circle store owner, paralyzing the young man.

"It's a tough situation to deal with right now"

Paule Legrand says her 20-year-old son Lems is a good young man who works 12 hours a day at his family's store in Oxford Circle, now he's paralyzed after he was shot multiple times overnight in an alley next to the store.

"We don't know how it's going to go, only God knows, because the doctor says he might be paralyzed from waist down," Legrand told FOX 29 in an exclusive interview.

Legrand says her son and his father, both Haitian immigrants, closed the store around 7:30. Just after 10, Lems left the family house a few blocks away and returned to the store at Loretto and Anchor Streets, that's when at least 13 shots were fired at Legrand.

"I have my son strong, healthy picking up heavy stuff with us yesterday and then now my son is in a hospital bed paralyzed," Mrs. Legrand said.

"You heard pop, pop, pow, pow, and then you heard a car screeching."

That what Lachele Smith heard. She lives on the alley behind the store. She says Legrand socializes with her family and stops by her home. She too says he's a hard working kid.

"He's like a son to me. He's at my house every day. His mom and father they're the nicest people," Smith told Fox 29.

Paule Legrand lost an older son to gun fire during a dispute over a woman two years ago. Now she's heartbroken that another one of her children has fallen victim to violence.

"We leave everything into god's hands," she said "We can be strong because life we continue to live, we lose one, two, but we still standing. We have to live our lives."

Police are looking for surveillance video near the crime scene. There were no signs of a robbery. A car Legrande was in was riddled by gun fire. Police say more than one weapon was used in this shooting.

Homicide Detectives and the Criminal Intelligence Unit are working with Northeast Detectives on this case, trying to determine if it is connected to recent gun violence in this neighborhood.
