Suspect sketches released in killing of CVS security guard

Saturday, March 1: Detroit police released sketches of three people wanted for shooting and killing a CVS security guard (see story below). If you recognize any of these suspects, call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP. There's a $2,500 reward. You will remain anonymous.

The security guard fatally shot while trying to stop a carjacking in a pharmacy parking lot had dreams of becoming a police officer.

"I applaud him as if he was a Detroit police officer for his heroic acts. Certainly he wanted to be a Detroit police officer, and only one month prior he had submitted an interest card to be considered for candidacy to the police academy," Chief James Craig said in a news conference Thursday.

The shooting happened Wednesday evening at the CVS store on Schaefer Highway near West McNichols Road.

Police say Courtney Meeks, 24, confronter three suspects in the process of carjacking a woman and a 6-year-old child.

The suspects approached the vehicle with a weapon and forced the woman in the passenger seat to get out. She grabbed the child and went inside the store for help. The driver of the vehicle was already inside the store.

Meeks, who was wearing a bullet-proof vest went outside to confront the suspects, but was shot before he had time to grab his weapon.

Detroit police arrived within minutes and searched the area. The suspects appear to have ditched the woman's vehicle quickly, and was located a short time later.

Chief Craig believes this was the suspect's second crime of the night. The same three men are suspected of trying to carjack another person less than a block away.

"When they couldn't get the car started they left that location and responded here to where they committed the crime," says Craig.  

DESCRIPTIONS

+ Suspect #1: Black male aged 20-25, 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim build, medium complexion, scruffy shadow-type beard, wearing a black skull cap, red coat with blue writing on it with a possible sport logo of an "SC"

+ Suspect #2: Black male in his 20s, 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim build, light complexion, wearing a skull cap, black and gray winter coat

+ Suspect #3: Black male approximately 18 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall weighing about 160 pounds, slim build, medium complexion and wearing a dark tan coat with a hoody (wanted in connection with the first carjacking attempt)

All are believed to live in the area of Six Mile Road and Schaeffer and committed both crimes on foot.

We're told Meeks worked for Alimar Security and he guarded this location for three years.

CVS issued this statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the death of our store security guard who was killed last night in a CVS/pharmacy parking lot while trying to help a customer. We are providing counseling services to our store employees and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation of this incident. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and to colleagues at his employer, Alimar Security."

"There's enough violence in the city. I just wish it all would just stop. My brother was going to be a police officer and they just destroyed his dream," says Eric Williams, the brother of Meeks. Williams says he was visiting Meeks at the store not long before the shooting happened, and received the phone call while he was on the freeway.
