Posted: Updated:

If you send an email or text to someone, when should you expect to hear back from them? There are some new rules for response time from Business Insider.

  • If you want to get a response back in half an hour, call.
  • If you want to hear back in within two hours, text.
  • If want to hear back the same day, use instant message.
  • If you email, don't expect to hear back for at least 24 hrs.

Expert Nicholas Carlson also recommends only opening email or a mail app if you have time to do something right then and there.

He also gives some insight into how he checks his mail.

  • 5% of his email messages will have a quick one or two sentence response that he fires off.
  • 1% of emails will require an immediate thoughtful response because it's from an extremely important sender.
  • 74% of his emails are just archived because they don't require responses.
  • 20% of emails will get marked as read, and then flagged or labeled because it will require a more thoughtful response in a day or two.
