Flooded Streets Ain't No Joke

by Christine Devine

My jaw fell open as my friend described the day her car was washed away. As bad as it was she says she knew it was not her day to die.

My friend is a fellow broadcaster in another state. She felt it her duty to head into work even though it was raining hard and road passings were flooded. She thought her SUV would make it across a wash to the other side of the road. How wrong she was.

Her SUV was swept down a rural wash, banged against horse fences. She dialed 911 as water filled her vehicle. Down the wash she went farther and farther away from homes and civilization. The water started rising, her purse was lost, her phone disappeared. She was forced to climb onto the roof of her SUV. It took 50 minutes for rescuers to find and get her to safety.

As Los Angeles is hit with a monster storm and flood advisories, let this blog be a reminder to motorists. My friend had turned away from a few other washes but thought her SUV would get her through the one she tackled. The water simply lifted her car up in a matter of minutes. Spun it sideways and sent it on its way down a wash.  The greater LA area is expected to see more rain than we've seen in three years. It ain't no joke.
