Letters Go Up In Flames in Postal Crash

Posted: Updated:

(FOX/AP)   Postal authorities say about 120,000 letters have been destroyed in a fiery crash between two big-rigs on an Orange County freeway.

The Orange County Register reported Tuesday  that the mail was being carried by one semi that rear-ended another at 1:30 a.m. on north State Highway 57.

California Highway Patrol officials say the truck went up in flames. The driver was not injured.

The crash closed three lanes on the freeway for several hours.

Postal Service spokesman Richard Maher says the mail was headed from Orange County to Ontario International Airport, then to destinations all over the country.

He says postal officials are offering documentation to anyone who might be affected by late fees or penalties because of the lost mail.
