SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Metro Detroit man just returned from Ukraine where he found himself in the midst of the tense, political struggle that's underway right now. He says he stood alongside anti-government protesters in Kiev.

Taras Nykoriak says when he arrived in Ukraine relatives asked him, "Why are you here when we're on the brink of war?" He says he had to see it firsthand. He spent two weeks in the city that was thrown into turmoil after Ukraine's president was ousted following weeks of demonstrations. Many turned deadly.

"One of the persons who died was shot by sniper fire," Nykoriak told Fox 2.

He shared home video from a joint funeral service he attended for two protesters who died. He says the Ukranian people are very strong and will not give up. The drama is pitting America against Russia as Vladimir Putin hopes to annex Crimea. People living there will vote next week. New government elections throughout Ukraine are set for May.

Nykoriak wants Metro Detroiters with family members in Ukraine to contact him about getting election monitors there. You can contact him at: sherifftaras@gmail.com
