PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The community prepares to lay a fallen hero to rest,  visitation services took place Sunday evening for Detective John Hobbs.

Hobbs was gunned down last Monday while trying to apprehend a wanted shooting suspect.

Hundreds of people filed in, with heavy hearts, as they prepared to say their final goodbye to the fallen detective, and to show their love and support for Hobbs' wife and three young children.

It's been a heartbreaking week for the Phoenix Police Department and those who knew and loved John Hobbs.

He was killed last Monday, as he and fellow members of the fugitive apprehension team chased down a man wanted for attempted murder. Detective Hobb's final act of heroism was taking down the man who shot him and his partner.

The 21 year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department was highly regarded among his peers.

"It's obviously emotional, John himself was just an incredible person, just an absolute incredibe person. He died the way he lived fighting, trying to catch the bad guy, he was an absolute example of what we strive to be," said Sgt. Steve Martos, a friend of Hobbs.

Officers from across the country came to pay their respects, some as far away as Denver, Chicago, and New Jersey. "It was very somber, it was sad sad, upsetting, there you have a young officer that left behind three young children... sometimes it goes through your mind that it could have been me," said Lt. Jeff Hoffman with the Chicago Police Department.

Detective Hobbs will be laid to rest tomorrow morning.
