Mich. lawmakers approve $215 million for road repairs

Posted: Updated:

The latest round of snow in metro Detroit will likely create even more potholes, but help is on the way.

Michigan lawmakers have agreed to set aside $215 million more for road maintenance this year, partly to help local governments grappling with winter costs and potholes.

The Senate voted 30-5 to approve a spending bill Wednesday while another storm was hitting the state. The House then voted 106-2 to send it to Gov. Rick Snyder, who is expected to sign the legislation.

More than half the money will go to shovel-ready road projects. Lawmakers also are allocating an additional $100 million so road agencies still have maintenance money in the summer after significant snow plowing costs.

The bill also adjusts the state budget to account for the loss of $73 million in expected savings after Senate Republicans delayed the expansion of Medicaid from January to April.

Meanwhile, motorists in Southfield continue to drive over back-breaking and dollar-draining potholes.

The website, www.fixyourride.org, was launched by the Michigan Association for Justice this week.

On the website you can report potholes and get information on if you qualify to get money from the state for damages, among other things.
