Police: Man dead at Selfridge was disoriented in cold

Posted: Updated:

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- State police say a man found dead at Selfridge Air National Guard Base apparently became disoriented in the cold and succumbed to the elements.

Police issued the update Friday, a day after a military member found the man's body outside a building on the west side of the base in Macomb County's Harrison Township.

Family members identified the man as 22-year-old from Scott Nacy of Fair Haven in St. Clair County.

Police say Nacy jumped a fence to get onto base property northeast of Detroit. He attempted to gain access to a building and vehicles to get out of the cold, but was unable to do so. Police say that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the death.

Nacy's family says he was celebrating his birthday with friends at Traffic Light Ltd, which is approximately four-tenths of a mile away from the base. Nacy's friends say he disappeared around 12:30 a.m. when he went outside to smoke a cigarette. Authorities at the base believe he came onto the property around 3 a.m.

The friends say they did go out looking for him. Nacy's wallet and cell phone are missing.

The military says it stepped up security afterward.

State police ask anyone with information on the death to call 877-616-4677 or 800-773-2587.
