Cook County sheriff has 3 challengers in primary

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart is running for his third term, but is facing a challenge in next week's primary by a lieutenant in his department and two men who once worked there.

Bill Evans is a lieutenant in the department. Sylvester Baker spent several years in the department and is now assistant director of security for City Colleges of Chicago. And Tadeusz "Ted" Palka is a former deputy sheriff and inspector in the department.

One key issue is the race is the county jail. In recent weeks the sheriff has been sued by inmates alleging they were mistreated. The county also settled a lawsuit for $2.4 million alleging Dart retaliated against deputies because they backed his opponent in the 2006 race.

Dart has denied the allegations in both lawsuits.
