The Rock on Broadway…and a Little Known Fact About Me

Posted: Updated:

No, I'm not talking about that Rock… though the thought of Dwayne Johnson on Broadway isn't half bad. I'm talking about the Italian Stallion!

Our Julie Chang enlightened all of us this morning with the news that "Rocky" is now a musical on New York's finest stage. (Cue the famous: ‘Yo Adrian!') The Broadway premiere took place earlier this week at NYC's Winter Garden Theater. To be clear, Sylvester Stallone isn't actually playing the part on stage, though he was there for the grand opening. The new musical, which cost about $16.5 million to create, is based on the original Rocky film, set in 1975 Philadelphia. It even climaxes with a 15-minute finale recreating the final dramatic scene in which Balboa battles Apollo Creed. What more could this girl ask for? Not much, considering Rocky is my favorite movie!

That's what I revealed on GDLA this morning. Ever since I first saw the ultimate underdog movie probably 30 years ago, I've been a die-hard fan of the original Rocky (and the 5 others that followed, though I could do without Rocky V). And when I say die-hard, I mean (and please don't judge): I have a couple of the original movie posters framed and hanging in my home (the photo to the left is current), I can recite Rocky quotes like nobody's business, I've watched Rocky a sickening amount of times, yes, I've been Adrian for Halloween (do you see the similarity?) and, it goes without saying, I have "Gonna Fly Now" and "Eye of the Tiger" readily available on my iPod. (Now, you know what I often listen to when I run).

Rocky is a classic. It's just one of those movies that inspires, motivates and makes you believe. It's full of heart, sincerity and true grit. It's what life's all about. That's why, at least for me, it's so easy to watch over and over...and over...

By the way, in case you're interested and in New York anytime soon, Rocky the musical runs through December 30th. No surprise, I hope to make it to the Big Apple before it wraps. But, oh wait… ‘there is no tomorrow…there is no tomorrow…'
