Rejuvenating your skin: Botox, fillers, fat and the vampire facelift

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Ah, the quest to find the eternal fountain of youth. And with summer just around the corner who doesn't want a fresher younger look. Karmela Lozina decided she was ready for a new look in time for the new season. We met Karmela at the offices of Dr. Misbah Khan, a dermatologic surgeon on the East Side.

"I do a combination of different things including Botox," Dr. Khan said. "And I also sometime use fillers, sometimes their own fat… then I have a lot of fractional machines that I can use to tighten up the skin and give them the rejuvenation."

Dr. Khan injected filler under Karmela's eyes to get rid of the dark circles and some of the hollowness that inevitably come with age.

There are other options, too.

One popular procedure: the vampire facelift. Dr. Khan explained how it works.

"If you take a patient's own blood and you spin it down and you isolate the platelets that are responsible for secreting those growth factors and those good stuff that will allow your skin to heal nice and pretty than you can isolate them and inject them into the area to speed up the process," she said.

But the Society of Plastic Surgeons says vampire facelifts are unproven scientifically, although the procedure has gained in popularity with some dermatologists and cosmetic doctors performing as many as 10 to 20 a month.

"Sounds very scary and I don't like anything to do with vampire, ghosts or werewolves," Karmela said.

Dr. Khan said there are plenty of more proven procedures you can opt for to improve your look.

"Talk to your doctor about what your concerns are but not necessarily tell them what you want or what exactly treatment you're coming in for because that may or may not be the most accurate or the appropriate treatment for you," she said.

In just a few minutes we saw the hollowness under Karmela's right eye disappear. She is proof, Dr. Khan said, that you don't have to go to extremes to look beautiful.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
