Could Tequila Be Good For Your Health?

Posted: Updated:

Tequila shots may do more than just lighten the mood at a party, the drink may be beneficial to your health.  Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and Mexican researchers say the natural sugars derived from this plant, called agavins, protected a group of mice against type 2 diabetes.

The mice were divided into seven groups.  One group received a diet of plain water, while the others received water supplemented with either aspartame, glucose, fructose, sucrose, agave syrup or agavins.

The mice that consumed agavins showed a reduction in food intake and weight, as well as a decrease in blood glucose levels.

Because agavins act as a dietary fiber and do not raise blood sugar. The researchers believe the ingredient could be used as an alternative sweetening agent.

Further research will be needed to confirm their beliefs. Findings are being presented at the American Chemical Society annual meeting in Dallas.
