BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Department of Corrections says a prison inmate is dead, the victim of an apparent homicide.

The department says 27-year-old Alexander Clark died Monday evening after being assaulted by fellow inmates at the Bachman medium-security unit of the Lewis prison complex.

ADC says officers found Clark lying injured on the ground after they broke up what appeared to be a fight involving several inmates in the unit's recreation yard.

The department says the inmates were in a group of approximately 20 inmates.

According to ADC, officers ordered the inmates to disperse and locked down the unit. Medical personnel performed life-saving measures on Clark, who was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Corrections Director Charles Ryan stated, "Incidents of this kind are intolerable.  The criminal investigation is underway, and we will request that those responsible for this act be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

Clark entered prison in 2006 after being sentenced on Pima County convictions for burglary, robbery, armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and misconduct with weapons.
