3D printing for fashion designers

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Ever wonder how an angel gets its wings? No, not hose wings. Victoria's Secret wings. The show-stopping look was a joint collaboration between Victoria's Secret and Shapeways, a company that specializes in 3D printing.

Savannah Peterson works with the company and gave us a tour of its Long Island City factory. She explained that you can design things on Shapeways even if you don't have 3D modeling skills. You can either co-create with one of the designers that already exist or use designer apps. Once you've settled on a design, it's uploaded to the site. The material is selected and that's when the actual printing process begins. It's called selective laser sintering, which involves lots of lasers, heat and tons of powder.

When the printing is done, the print trays are pulled out and allowed to cool off before they're taken to the breakout room where workers blast and sift through mounds of nylon powder.

3D printing is making such a huge impact in the fashion industry that many up and coming designers are using the technology to create their own signature looks.
