Ann Arbor apartment complex going smoke-free

An Ann Arbor apartment complex will soon become a smoke-free community.

Management at Parkway Meadows recently informed tenants by notice in the mail that smoking will no longer be permitted inside the apartment units beginning April 1. If tenants wish to smoke they must walk at least 25 feet away from the apartment.

Many tenants who are smokers believe the new restriction is unfair.

"As a tenant who lives here and I pay rent, it's my right to do what I want in my house," says Summer Abdel Jeber.

"Smokers should have a right, but I understand that other people that don't smoke have a right also for second-hand smoke," says Maureen Kirschenhiter.

Even some non-smokers who live in the complex question the legality and rationale of the law.

"Ann Arbor's one of those places where people would like to legalize pot. So, why would you not let them smoke in their own houses if you're going to let them smoke pot?" questions Julie Wilson.

In 2010 smoking inside bars and restaurants became illegal. Cigar bars and casinos are exempt from that law. Some hospitals and universities have also banned smoking, but apartments were never part of the legislation.

Bottom line in Michigan: smokers are not legally protected.
