2 Big Rigs, Collide In Freeway Fatal, Lanes Closed

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man who crashed the big rig he was driving into a stalled semi-trailer on the Artesia (91) Freeway died at a hospital today, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol Officer Daniel Howard said paramedics took as much as 10 minutes extract the 58-year-old victim from the big rig, which smashed into a stalled FedEx big rig in the middle lanes of the east 91 between Knott Avenue and Beach Boulevard, about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The man was taken to a hospital in grave condition, and he died there, CHP officials said Authorities withheld his name, pending notification of kin. The driver of the FedEx tractor-trailer escaped serious injury, authorities said. Two other vehicles also were caught in the wreckage,
according to the CHP.

Howard said an occupant of one of the vehicles was hospitalized with minor injuries. The second vehicle -- an older Chevrolet Suburban -- sustained major front-end damage, Howard said, but the family of six onboard was unharmed.
