Part of upper Lake Shore drive will close Monday

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A part of upper Lake Shore Drive will be closed Monday as construction begins on the Navy Pier Flyover project.

Construction starts Monday, which will close the right and shoulder lanes of northbound upper Lake Shore Drive between Illinois Street and Grand Avenue, a statement from the Chicago Department of Transportation said.

The corner of Grand Avenue and lower Lake Shore Drive could be impacted by the construction but will still remain open to traffic, the statement said.

Lakefront Trail will still be open for pedestrians and cyclists, but the path will detour around the construction activity, the department said. Businesses and homes in the area will still be accessible.

The flyover, which will have a bike and pedestrian path, will extend from south of the Chicago River Bridge to Jane Addams Park, 550 E. Grand Ave., the statement said.

It will separate the Lakefront Trail from Illinois Street and Grand Avenue, aimed at reducing crossing conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists and cars going to and from Navy Pier, the statement said.

Construction for the $60 million project will pan out over three phases until its planned completion in 2018, the department said.

The first phase starts Monday, focusing on the area between Jane Addams Park and the Ogden Slip, the statement said. Construction will then move on to the area between the slip and the Chicago River. The third phase will be focused on improving the path over the Chicago River Bridge, the statement said.
