Sun Valley Metal Recycler Facing Charges for Dumping Waste

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11/CNS) - Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer announced today that his office filed criminal charges against a Sun Valley metal recycler, alleging he illegally disposed of hazardous waste.

"Los Angeles residents deserve to live in a neighborhood free of toxic and hazardous waste, and that is why I filed this lawsuit," Feuer said.

Jose Guadalupe Romero, 33, his business, JGR Metal Recycling Inc. and the owners of the land at 12278 Branford St., where the business operates, were each charged with 15 counts related to the illegal disposal of various hazardous materials including lead, cadmium, chromium, lead, zinc and barium.

The business failed to properly label and keep hazardous waste containers closed, according to the criminal complaint.

A joint investigation by the city attorney's Environmental Justice Unit, the state Department of Toxic Substances Control and the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Health Hazardous Materials Division led to the charges.

If convicted as charged, the defendants could face up to 14 years in jail and $510,000 in fines.
