Yesenia and Carla: A Quinceanera Wish For A Forever Home

Posted: Updated:

This week on Wednesday's Child, we watch as a community of caring individuals and businesses come together in support of two sisters in foster care to help turn back the hands of time and give older sister Yesenia (1997) a Quinceañera. And serving as the dama was younger sister Carla (2000).

The day started off with an early morning call-time for hair and makeup services for both sisters, and then Yesenia slipped into her red quinceañera gown and Carla into her white dama dress before heading off to a photo session. They went on to make a grand entrance at the reception where our community of Wednesday's Child partners and friends gathered to serve as surrogate family for Yesenia.

Yesenia and Carla have a very tight bond and both have high aspirations for themselves. Yesenia recalls being bitten by a scorpion when she was a little girl and surviving the experience with the help and compassion of doctors and now hopes to be a physician some
day and similarly help others. Carla also wants to be in the medical field but, with her love for animals, she hopes to some day be a veterinarian. In the here and now though, these two sisters want to be part of a permanent and loving family and to know that – even when they go off possibly to separate colleges – that they share a place to come home to and can say "Hi mom and dad, I'm home."

Having a permanent family to call your own may seem like a simple wish, but it can sometimes be difficult to attain when you're an older child in foster care. Keeping with Quinceañera tradition, Yesenia's cake displayed a "15" even though she's already 16 as our version of this rite of passage caught up with her. As Yesenia's quinceañera cake was cut and shared, we reaffirmed our wish – that before Carla turns 15, they will have their own forever family with whom to celebrate.

This week we want to make a federal case for Joseph (1998) finding a forever family, so we obtained the necessary clearances to accompany Joseph to the Los Angeles Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). And during our friendly investigation, we found Joseph to be a dynamic teen with a good bit of focus and determination for someone his age.

California motorists are burdened with the highest gas tax in the nation: 71 cents for every gallon of gas purchased. If that was not enough, along comes AB-32 that mandates that vehicle fuel production will be, in effect, taxed beginning in 2015.

We're in the hazy days of August and soon it will be back-to-school for many children… or the very first day of school for kids like Khalid (2009), who will be starting kindergarten soon. But before he heads off to school, we swooped up Khalid and his baby sister Ah'Niyah (2011) for a day of fun and play at Pelican Pier at Shoreline Village in Long Beach, California.
