The Pennsylvania Delegation Encourages Pope Francis To Attend The World Meeting Of Families

Posted: Updated:

The meeting lasted for just a few minutes with Pope Francis, but local leaders hope that was enough to convince him to attend the 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.

Fox 29's Bruce Godon was there when the pitch to the pontiff was made.

If the members of the local delegation were disappointed that their scheduled meeting at Pope Francis' private residence was moved to a public setting, they did not show it.

"We are ecstatic about what happened, how it happened, it could not have been better," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said.

"I don't know how you beat what we just went through, this whole trip has been wonderful," Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett said.

As Pope Francis made his way around a packed St. Peter's Square, Corbett was taking everything in and practicing his sales pitch for the pontiff.

As the event concluded, the local leaders were ushered center stage.

And Corbett finally got his chance.

"I invited him, along with the Archbishop, and mayor for the World Meeting of Families, we're more than happy to have him there," Corbett said.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter followed, carrying with him a replica Liberty Bell, with Pope Francis' name inscribed on it.

"He was just very gracious and thankful. He asked me to pray for him, and I said yes, but I asked him to pray for me, he said yes," Nutter said.

Nutter also presented the pope with a football jersey from his Alma, St. Joe's prep, along with letters from students.

Every member of the delegation was truly moved.
